Jewelry Material and Jewelry Care

Royal Glam jewelry is made out of quality alloy hypoallergenic materials that can be used for most types of skin. Most items are made from stainless steel, 925 sterling silver, gold plated and/or gold filled materials. Every piece has a description of the material used.

What is stainless steel jewelry?
Stainless steel, an alloy of iron, carbon, chromium, and traces of other metals, is highly resistant to rust or corrosion. A phenomenon known as passivation makes the steel less reactive with its environment, preventing the oxidation reaction that occurs in iron. The chromium in the alloy forms a thin, invisible film of chromium oxide on the surface of the metal that protects iron oxide, or rust, from forming. This passive film also prevents staining and discoloration of the metal under normal circumstances. Few chemicals can etch or corrode the metal, and stainless steel jewelry will not encounter most of these. However, an atmosphere that lacks sufficient oxygen can prevent the chromium oxide film from forming and passivation from occurring in certain types of stainless steel. This property is why not all stainless steel is suitable for body jewelry as piercings may preclude the formation of the oxide film that protects the metal from rusting.

What is 925 Silver?

A 925 stamp (aka a .925 or S925 stamp) signifies that 92.5% of your jewelry is sterling silver, and the remaining 7.5% is made of alloy metals. If you see 925 stamped on a piece of jewelry, this means the jewelry meets the quality standards of silver.

What does 14K - 18K gold plated?
Gold-plated jewelry is created using an electro-chemical process that places a layer of Gold on copper, brass, or some other base metal.  The thickness of the Gold used in plating usually determines the price of the piece. It's a good quality thin layer of gold applied to the metal jewelry most often copper or silver.

It is NOT real gold it requires special care to make it last longer.

How long will it last?
Depends on how often the item is worn and how thick the plating is.  Most of our Gold-Plated Chains are heavy Gold-plated.  Gold-plated jewelry is much less expensive than Gold-filled; however, the Gold color will eventually wear off as it comes into contact with water, salts or pollutants in the air.

How to take care of your jewelry pieces?
Frequent cleaning is recommended to maintain its luxurious shine.  Wipe your jewelry carefully with a soft cloth to keep it clean and free of elements which oxidize. We recommend and use our Jewelry Polishing Cloths.
